The Story Behind Baskin-Robbins’ Pralines ‘n Cream

The Story Behind Baskin-Robbins’ Pralines ‘n Cream

It’s National Pralines Day and there’s no better way to celebrate than with a scoop of one of Baskin-Robbins most popular flavors, Pralines ‘n Cream. Keep reading for the inside scoop on this southern classic!

Following a trip to New Orleans, Irv Robbins, and his wife Irma, were enjoying some souvenir pralines at home when inspiration hit. They rushed into the kitchen, got out some vanilla ice cream, tossed in the pralines and added a caramel ribbon and Pralines 'n Cream was born. Originally available in 1970 as a Flavor of the Month, this new ice cream flavor was such a success, it caused a national uproar when stores ran out.

With franchise locations running out of the new flavor, Baskin-Robbins started receiving pleas and petitions with hundreds of signatures on them from ice cream lovers begging for more Pralines 'n Cream. Dear Abby's advice column in the national newspaper even joined in, pleading for more. Students at UC Santa Barbara even staged a sit-in to bring the flavor back.  In the end, Baskin-Robbins made a special production run to give fans what they wanted, and the flavor has been a Baskin-Robbins favorite ever since.

All year round, enjoy a scoop of Pralines ‘n Cream in a freshly baked, chocolate-dipped waffle cone, on a Polar Pizza® Ice Cream Treat, as a Pre-Packed Quart or as a layer in one of our signature ice cream cakes. Pralines ‘n Cream is the perfect scoop of a southern classic that you can also enjoy right at home with “no contact” delivery via DoorDash or Uber Eats, or you can place an order at or through the Baskin-Robbins mobile app for pickup via drive-thru, carry-out, or curbside where available.
